The story of a strong, risqu\u00e9 woman who rebels against the\u00a0patriarchal\u00a0ideal of a virtuous wife while the husband is free to have affairs without tarnishing his reputation and hence\u00a0<span>confronting the hypocrisy of the double standard\u00a0<\/span><span>promoted feminism long before the term was used and made Norma Shearer (along with her other pre-code movies) almost a feminist pioneer. Based on the novel <em>\u201cEx-Wife\u201d<\/em> by\u00a0Ursula\u00a0Parrott, it was highly controversial back in the day and ended up getting Norma Shearer her <strong>Best Actress<\/strong> Oscar for it.
