target=\"_blank\">uwmspeccoll<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Those of us who have studied, been acquainted with, or\u00a0strategically avoided German literature are undoubtedly familiar with Johann\u00a0Wolfgang von Goethe and his most famous work, <i>Faust.<\/i> In short, it is a tragic\u00a0play, told in two parts, about a man obsessed with obtaining infinite knowledge\u00a0who sells his soul to the devil followed by the all-too-familiar\u00a0Goethe love story.<\/p>\n<p>I was immediately drawn to the creepy illustrations done by Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator, Harry\u00a0Clarke. These images capture the way Faust made me feel while\u00a0studying German literature in college: slightly confused, a bit uncomfortable,\u00a0and oddly satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>This illustrated edition of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/uw-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com\/MIL:MIL_Archives:UWI71340872290002121\" target=\"_blank\">Faust<\/a><\/i> was printed in 1925 by George\u00a0G. Harrap &amp; Co. in London. This limited edition copy is no. 535 of one\u00a0thousand copies published for distribution in England and is signed by the illustrator.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you, Harry, for your creepiness.
