Racehorse aboard: The Trans-Atlantic Champion

The racehorse Papyrus enjoyed VIP treatment on the Aquitania. The winner of the 1923 Derby was housed in a special stable, padded with air cushions and with a floor of wooden battens to help him to remain on his feet if the ship rolled. As well as a vet, stable boys and a blacksmith, Papyrus had an equine companion, Bar Gold, to keep him amused. Unfortunately, she was seasick throughout the journey. Papyrus performed like an old salt until reaching New York. The cheers of passengers on the nearby Caronia caused him to rear in panic and nearly fall off the gangplank.

The Aquitania’s band serenaded him at Belmont Park Race Track, New York, while her Captain looked on from a box. It was to no avail: Papyrus lost his race by six lengths.
