Lillian Gish (1893-1993)
John Barrymore considered Lillan Gish an actress on the level of Sarah Bernhardt, writer Edward Wagenknecht notes in an essay, Wagenknecht then goes on to refer to “the exaltation, the profound mysticism of Miss Gish’s playing.“ Many Critics and film writers have joined Wagenknecht in lauding her with exalted prose. Some, However, have argued that her persona. an ethereal beauty in late Victorian style, narrowed her range of roles. Its purely subjective judgement call, but no one can deny her iconic status in silent film history.
